For my first interpretation, I chose vampires to align with the nocturnal and creature-of-the-night subthemes. With this interpretation I wanted to experiment with a different type of digital brush, so for this piece I used a digital watercolour brush which I found worked well. I began this drawing by creating a sketch and then adding on a white base, and layering different tones of grey. I then focused on the eyes and getting all the details like the liner and subtle eyeshadows, like the reference images. Then moving onto the blood aspect which was cool to do with the watercolour brush s it created this splatter effect. I then moved onto the hair and then the background which I decided on red for so that the white pops. Then just some simple line work for the tarot card border and red font colour to tie it all together. Overall, I like how this interpretation came out.
For my second interpretation of Abigail Larson's piece, I aimed to juxtapose agony with a proud, embracing stance. To achieve this, I redesigned the character's pose, placing them centrally and upright. A Victorian-style dress was added to reinforce the Gothic theme. I began with a basic sketch of the dress and then coloured it. After encountering difficulties with the skirt ruffles, I revised the design for a better fit. Next, I focused on the character's hair and makeup, aiming for a feminine look that complemented the masculine wings. The wings from the previous interpretation were reused, but their positioning was adjusted to suit the new character. To complete the piece, I incorporated a tarot card border, featuring moons and bats to match the overall aesthetic. I experimented with different typography options to find the best fit. Overall, I’m very happy with how this interpretation turned out.
For this interpretation I wanted to invoke the essence of Iren Horrors and try and encapsulate her style whilst incorporating mine. With this drawing I started off by coming up with the concept for the tarot card, to which I decided that it should be strength and to do something with wolves. With this character I was going with the storyline that she has an affinity with the wolf. TO begin I came up with a sketch and worked out some positioning and what worked well together. The beginning the colour process and using an ink pen tool to get a similar feel to Horrors. It was also fun to do more of a setting illustration as my other interpretations have been quite focal on just the characters. Overall, I'm quite pleased with the outcome of this interpretation.
For this interpretation I decided to experiment with lighting and the way it forms over the faces. In order to connect this technique with my theme and sub-theme I decided to create a character that has horns and give the interpretation a nightly aesthetic with the colour palette, I also decided to switch up the style of characters and go for a more anime-like style instead of heavy realism. To begin this drawing I started out by just creating a regular character so that I could then play with different lightings afterwords to see which worked. In order to assist in this interpretation I also did a primary images photoshoot where we tested out how different lightings frame the face and found that the purple and orange worked the best aesthetically. For the tarot card design I wanted to go slightly more traditional with the half circle at the top and a kind of simple and swirly design for the border. I love the subtle blue tones within the direct light but also the hints of reds on the other side which make my interpretation interesting and relates back to my mood board and primary images. Overall, I like how this interpretation turned out.
